One of my favorite hikes in NJ. I like to call it "The Near 1000-foot StairMaster." It follows the AT off NJ-94 right up the mountain to Pinwheel Vista which overlooks the Vernon Valley and on a clear day, High Point!

The trail starts right on the parking lot walking directly towards Wawayanda Mountain. The path was pretty flat up until we entered the woods, then it was all up until we reached the top with one pit stop half-way up.

The view halfway up. It's right above the first switchback (I believe). It's difficult to miss.

The trail continues to steeply ascend up the mountain via rock slaps, truly living up to the trail's name of "Stairway to Heaven." There's a short break from climbing at a creek, but then it's straight up until the top.
Once reached the summit, there is a large pile of rocks to signal the beginning of the blue trail (that breaks off of the AT) to follow to Pinwheel Vista.

A new addition to the pile of rocks since my last hike up, in case anybody got lost!

From there just follow the blue trail to the breathtaking Pinwheel Vista.

The return trip is less exhausting, but still difficult due to the steep decline. There were a few thru-hikers on the trail since it was still early in the season, but there were also a good number of day-hikers (like us), but nothing compared to a weekend.
